Avatar «c’est moi» – virtual geographies of the self
April 2010
How avatars can function as alter-egos
Avatar bodies and identities allow a type of agency, the ability to act within a representation, which constitutes the character’s subjectivity; they serve as positional markers and substitutes for the absent body; the term also stands for actions, gestures, and a discourse aspiring to insinuate a soul, interiority, and conscience. Considering that the meaning of action is drama, the study of the theatrical character (Abirached) can be advantageously applied to virtual worlds; the category of person – the «I» - subjectivity and self-consciousness, is still only possible through the use of language (Benveniste). However, if the construction of the self results from an automatism of everyday language, reiterating the continuous association between the body and its images (Damasio), the proliferation of avatars will surely modify the perception of the individual identity.
