Visiting Scientist Scholarship
This call for a Visiting Scientist ("Bolsa de Cientista Convidado", BCC) is addressed to a PhD holder with at least 4 years of experience in developing and applying machine learning methods to support research programs for the validation of ocean colour data products from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) of the European Space Agency (ESA), or from similar space programs.
The research institution is CENTRIA (Centro de Inteligência Artificial), hosted at the Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, located at the campus of Monte de Caparica. CENTRIA has been carrying on a program for the analysis of MERIS data products during the last years in the framework of on going research activities of interest to the ESA. The successful candidate will contribute to this activity by: 1) implementing neural networks to derive ocean colour products on a regional scale; 2) devising strategies to define the applicability range of regional algorithms; 3) comparing regional results with standard products from the MERIS program; 4) developing statistical schemes to combine regional and global products; and 5) producing summary reports and peer-review publications.
Candidates must hence have a throughout understanding of ocean colour radiative transfer, as well as a consolidated experience in setting up and applying neural networks to retrieve data products from remote sensing radiometric data. Very good writing and communication skills in English are required. Expertise in statistics, physics and Matlab programming will also be highly considered.
The foreseen start of the Visiting Scientist position is the 1st of January 2013. The duration of the BCC Grant is one year, extensible to a second year upon fund availability. The BCC Grant compensation is 2650€ per month plus social security. Interested candidates must provide a cover letter summarizing research methods planned to address the job tasks of here above and a curriculum vitae, by sending an e-mail (subject: “Visiting Scientist MERIS”) to Prof. Pedro Barahona (pb@fct.unl.pt) until 14 December 2012. Selected candidates may be called for interview during the coming month of December.
