Abstract
Though, most of the knowledge available in the Semantic Web is context-dependent, this aspect is not explicitly supported by semantic web representation languages. Some extensions to cope with this limitation have been studied, however, none seems to be satisfactory enough. Rather than extending Semantic Web languages, we propose to fill this gap by tailoring the well established theories of context, developed in the field of AI, to be applicable inside the current Semantic Web languages. In doing this, we take into account the expressivity limitations of RDF/OWL languages, but also the implementability and scalability of the approach within the state-of-the-art triple stores. In this talk, we present a formal definition of a Contextualized Knowledge Repository, its axiomatization, and the description of a first prototypical implementation on top of SESAME, one of the standard Semantic Web triple stores.
Short-bio
Luciano Serafini has more than 20 years of experience in academic research and technology transfer in the areas of Knowledge and Data Management. His research interests include logic for distributed knowledge (since 1990 development of the logic of context) information integration, automated reasoning, multi agent system, ontological reasoning for the semantic web, collaborative knowledge aquisition and modelling, and integration of logical and statistical knowledge. He is member of the PC committee of several top level conferences and workshops in the research area. Partner responsible in European Projects (DataGrid, Aposdle, Pescado). Local chair of the 2002 edition of the European Summer School on logic language and information, and supervisor of several Master and PhD students, by the University of Trento, Verona, Milano and Graz. Teaching activity includes courses in Database, Information systems, Mathematical Logic and Knowledge Representation, for the Master degree and Doctoral Degree at the University of Trento and Bolzano. He is currently head of the Data and Knowledge Management Unit of the FBK/IRST, Trento Italy.
