AbstractFounded on health science, computer science, software engineering, and entrepreneurship, Medical Decision Logic, Inc. ("mdlogix") is working to create web-based software products for the health domain. Our current enterprise-scale clients nclude three of the top six academic medical centers in the US, and our current technology platform includes operational constructs from psychometrics, workflow representation, and constraint-based temporal reasoning. mdlogix has a strong interest in R&D, for which we are actively seeking partnerships and resources. Topics of interest are generated by the intersection of a multi-level systems biology model of processes of health, disease, and organizational adaptability computational paradigms such as logic-based knowledge representation, quantitative reasoning, and adaptive workflows. For example, we are interested in making use of Answer Set Programming to better understand the structure and dynamics of social networks with human cognition and culture, and questions of how to better represent policy and rules for more effective collaboration.
Short-bioAllen Y. Tien, MD, MHS is Founder, President, and Director of Applied Research of Medical Decision Logic. As well as being a Board-Certified psychiatrist, he has Master's level training in biostatistics and postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology, research design and methods, and public mental health issues. Dr. Tien was a full-time tenure-track faculty member in the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health Department of Mental Hygiene and School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry from 1988 to 1997, promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. Active in research in public mental health epidemiology, services, and prevention, and clinical neuroscience, for a number of years he taught a key Mental Hygiene course on multi-level etiologic models of mental disorders.

In the following decade (1998-present), Dr. Tien made a major transition from academic health research and teaching to entrepreneur, founding the applicant organization, a for-profit small business, Medical Decision Logic, Inc. ("mdlogix"), with long-term visionary involvement in software purpose, architecture development, interface design, and evaluation. At the same time, Dr. Tien continues with intellectual interaction and contributions in the role of Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Health Science Informatics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

At a systems level, Dr. Tien continues to lead mdlogix as a science and technology organization, working to integrate informatics research with product development and deployment, which is philosophically aligned with the deeper mission to integrate biomedical and public health research with clinical care and public health programs.
